Lea Rekow is active in all aspects of media-making, curating, publishing and programming. She is currently working as a writer / producer on a narrative feature film in development with Australian Film Commission. As well, she curates an ongoing series on PS1 radio on sound art and new media, is cultural advisor to the Australian Consulate in New York, is co-curator of Lalutta Project Space in Brooklyn, and periodic advisor for NYFA.
As a media arts practitioner Lea has produced a number of oral history, film
and interactive media/performance projects that have been shown internationally.
She has most recently produced a documentary and oral history project based
on the continuing civil war in Burma.
From 2003-2007, as Founding Director of Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS], Lea established
and ran a highly regarded media arts space in Manhattan. She has also produced
several art and media publications, including DRIFT with Lee Ranaldo.
In the US, Lea’s work has been shown at such places as the Angelica,
Lowes, and Village cinemas in New York, and been presented at academic institutions
including Cal Arts and SUNY Binghamton. Her work has played in theaters internationally
in Taiwan, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Canada, Australia,
France, Korea, England and Ireland, among others.
Lea was previously Director of Harmonic Ranch, and Director of Media Programs
at the Center for Peace and Human Security. She has taught at Pratt Institute,
performed with media activist group Emergency Broadcast Network, and was
a Producer of New Media for Simon and Schuster Interactive. She also holds
a Masters degree in film and digital media.
In addition, Lea has sat on numerous panels for SVA [School of Visual Arts],
Parsons School of Design, Amnesty International [Firefly media arm], as a
juror for the prestigious MacArthur award, and as a residencies advisor for
the LMCC [Lower Manhattan Cultural Council]. Her work as a filmmaker, arts
practitioner, curator and gallerist has been reviewed in the New York Times,
Art in America, Art Forum, Time Out New York, Sydney Morning Herald, Artlies,
and others. Lea has received several awards, scholarships and commissions
for her work, which is held in several private and academic collections.
